By the OJi IVF Fertility Team
Simple but important is what one of the most practical questions intended parents ask is: how long does the surrogacy journey take? Family to family the timelines vary, though understanding the typical stages is what lets you plan realistically. Families are guided through each phase at OJi IVF, so that expectations stay clear from the first consultation right through to the day your baby is in your arms.
The Main Stages of the Journey
Connected stages are what every surrogacy journey moves through. Pregnancy has a fairly fixed length, but the steps sitting either side of it add to the overall timeline:
Consultation and eligibility assessment
Legal documentation, and the certificates required
Surrogate screening and matching
Embryo creation and preparation
Embryo transfer
Pregnancy and monitoring
Delivery, and the post-birth legal handover
Inside the Preparation Phase
Consultations, medical evaluations, counselling, legal paperwork, that is what the early phase covers. Rushed is what this stage cannot be, because eligibility is established here, compliance with India's Surrogacy (Regulation) Act, 2021 is ensured here, and the surrogate is confirmed medically and psychologically fit here.
Screening the Surrogate, and the Transfer Itself
A suitable surrogate gets identified, and from there she works through pre-transfer health screening and the preparation of her cycle. Creating the embryo through IVF and getting the endometrium ready are both timed with some care. The transfer is over quickly. Everything leading into it has to be precise, and none of it is optional.
The Pregnancy Phase and Its Length
Take a transfer that worked, and what follows runs the ordinary length, a full-term pregnancy is generally around 40 weeks. She is monitored continuously across the whole of it, cared for medically, and supported besides.
A first embryo transfer does not always end in a pregnancy. Where a cycle fails, more transfers may be called for, and everything after that sits further out than planned.
A Simple Timeline Overview
Preparation varies so much between families, and matching does too, that we have set out the stages one by one instead of putting a single total against the lot. Roughly 12 to 18 months from consultation to delivery is the figure many programmes quote.
What Can Move the Timeline
Several things pull on the length of this, in one direction or the other:
Speed of completing legal and medical documentation
Availability of a suitable surrogate
Number of embryo transfers needed
Medical considerations, whether during screening or during the pregnancy
How OJi IVF Keeps Things on Track
Most delays start in paperwork, or in coordination that nobody owned. So our team carries the process end to end: certificates and insurance on one side of it, screening and transfer and documentation on the other.
So, how long does the surrogacy journey take? Months rather than weeks is what to plan around. Stay flexible with it. Lean on people who have walked the route before. Prepare with some care and the waiting stops being waiting; it becomes the path towards the child you are about to meet.
